New Art Criterion ( sample grading sheet)

Hey Jin Grade 11 ( Grading sample )
Criterion A: Knowledge and Understanding:
Strand 1: demonstrates knowledge of the art form studied, including concepts, processes, and excellent use of appropriate language
Hey Jin displayed her understanding of the contemporary art form in a mind map. She is able to elaborate different forms of contemporary art in relation to abstraction, postmodernism and some significant artists. However, there is limited evidence inform her understanding of the concepts and development process of the contemporary movement in the PJ. She did not explain the characteristic ( use of appropriate language) of the relevant art form using appropriate terminology.
For instance, Chuk Close's is famous of his photo realism art form; jenny Saville and her significant feminist subject matter.
Strand 2: demonstrates knowledge of the role of the art form in original or displaced contexts.
Hey Jin attempted to justify Chuk Close's creative process in the context of innovation and science. ( displayed context). However, there is limited information about Chuk Close's creative process impacts the new perspective of portrait painting technique. She should elaborate more in depth understanding  in order to achieve higher band in the rubric. Besides, there is limited history background and timeline of the relevant art form in the PJ. Hey Jin will attain a higher band in the rubric if she explains the role of contemporary, postmodernism or abstraction and its influence from the social, political or economic aspects. ( Role of the art form in original).
Strand 3: demonstrates use of acquired knowledge to inform his or her artwork.
Hey Jin demonstrates excellent use of acquired knowledge throughout his experimental process. She shows different stages of colour mixing techniques in relation to the different brightness effect of the light source.
**So, in this case, this student is able to achieve only one strand for "excellent", the other 2 strands for substantial or adequate. It is a band between 5 to 6. Therefore, the task specific is really important to determine which band is most appropriate.

Criterion B: Developing Skills
Strand 1: demonstrates acquisition and development of the skills and techniques of the art form studied.
Strand 2: demonstrates application of skills and techniques to create, perform and/or present art.
Hey Jin compares and contrasts the similarities and differences between watercolour, charcoal and oil pastel in the PJ. She was able to identify the advantage and disadvantages of vary medium by showing a series of experimental sketches and Venn diagram. She displays substantial level of skills and techniques to create the still life painting using texture, tone and colour.
**In this case, she scored excellent development of the skills and technique for strand 1. However, there is only one concrete evidence provided in the PJ to identify her application of skills and technique, the still life painting does not fit into  highest rubric” excellent” . I would say it is only band 4-5 for this criterion.

Criterion C: Thinking Creatively
Strand 1: presents an outline of a clear and feasible artistic intention.
Strand 2: presents an outline of alternatives, perspectives, and imaginative solutions.
Strand 3: demonstrates exploration of ideas through the developmental process to a point of realization.
Although there is a series of initial sketches throughout the experimental stages which she displays enthusiasm in the creative process, there is no evidence of her initial thought to outline a feasible artistic intention. It is only on one reflection page that she mentioned “ How research helped me on drawing?” (alternatives, perspective of possible solution). She can achieve a higher band if she explains how she got her inspiration in relation to her research of the relevant art movements or artists. Lacking evidence of ideas exploration in order to outline a clear artistic intention validates her achievement in this criterion for band 4.
** In this case, only 1 strand is achieved. She did not present evidence for strands 2 and 3.
Criterion D: Responding
1: presents an outline of connections with depth and insight, and effectively transfers learning to new settings.
2: creates an artistic response that is effectively inspired by the world around him or her.
3: presents an evaluation of the artwork of self and others.

To assess this criterion, students need to understand what does “ Transfer learning to new settings” means. Strand 2 is somehow related to strand 1 and 3 in Thinking Creatively. Therefore, the students is expected to be able to develop an initial thought inspired by the knowledge and understanding from either individual’s research or classroom discussion, peers’ feedback. There is limited evidence for this part in Hey Jin’s PJ. But it is not fair to make judgement if she did not even understand the requirements. Thus, I would like to give a band 3-4 for this one.
